The Family Cult
There are some exterior ordinances and external means of grace clearly implied in the Word of God, but in practice we have few, if any, clear and positive precepts; rather, we just collect them from the example of holy men and various secondary circumstances. An important goal is achieved by this means and this is how the state of our heart is tested.
It serves to make clear if Christians neglect a duty clearly implied by the fact of not being able to fulfill it. Thus, we discover more of the true state of our mind and it becomes manifest whether or not we have a burning love for God and for serving Him. This applies to both public and family worship.
However, it is not difficult to give proof of the obligation to be devotees in the home. (See: Your Home as an Altar of Adoration and Intimacy with God)
The family cult must be done reverently, sincerely and simply. It is then that the little ones will receive their first impressions and form their first concepts of the Lord God. Great care must be taken in order not to give them a false idea of the Divine Person.
To this end, a balance must be maintained between communicating its transcendence and its immanence, its sanctity and its mercy, its power and its tenderness, its justice and its grace. The worship should begin with a few words of prayer invoking the presence and blessing of God. You should follow a short passage of his Word, with brief comments on it.
The benefits and blessings of family worship are incalculable.
1 Family worship avoids many sins. Wonder the soul, communicate a sense of the majesty and authority of God, present solemn truths to the mind, bring God's benefits over the home.
2 Personal devotion in the home is a very influential way, under God, to communicate devotion to the little ones. Children are mostly creatures that imitate, who love to copy what they see in others.
